Strategy 1: Order Book Tape Reading
Tape reading is the art of watching the order book and the time-and-sales feed in real time to gauge buying and selling pressure. This is the most fundamental scalping technique and predates technical analysis by over a century. In crypto, the order book shows limit orders stacked at various price levels, and the tape (also called the trade feed) shows every executed market order with its size, price, and direction.
The key signals to watch for in tape reading include:
- Large market buys hitting the ask: When you see a cluster of aggressive market buy orders lifting through multiple price levels, it signals strong buying pressure. This often precedes a short-term price spike.
- Large resting limit orders (walls): A large bid wall (a single order or cluster of orders at one price level) can act as short-term support. If the wall holds, price may bounce. If it gets absorbed or pulled, expect a breakdown.

- Absorption: When a large wall on one side of the book absorbs repeated aggressive orders without moving, it indicates that the level is heavily defended. Price is likely to reverse from that level. For example, if a large ask wall at $95,000 absorbs multiple large market buys without price breaking above, shorts become favorable.
Strategy 2: Range Scalping
Range scalping works in sideways markets where price oscillates between a clearly defined support floor and resistance ceiling. This is one of the simplest and most reliable scalping strategies because the entry and exit levels are well-defined, and the risk-reward math is straightforward.
To identify a range, look for at least two touches on both the support and resistance levels on the 1-minute or 5-minute chart. The more touches, the more defined the range. Once the range is established, buy at or near the support level with a stop-loss just below it, and sell at or near the resistance level with a stop-loss just above it. Your profit target is the opposite boundary of the range minus a small buffer.
The danger with range scalping is that ranges eventually break. When they do, the breakout move is often swift and violent. To protect yourself, always use a stop-loss. If support breaks, do not try to catch the falling knife. Instead, flip your bias and look for short scalps on the breakdown. If resistance breaks, look for long scalps on the breakout. The key is to remain flexible and recognize when the range is no longer valid.
Strategy 3: Breakout Scalping
Breakout scalping is the opposite of range scalping. Instead of trading within the range, you wait for the range to break and then ride the momentum of the breakout. Breakouts work because they trigger a cascade of stop orders and forced liquidations, creating a sudden surge of volume and directional movement.
The setup involves identifying a consolidation pattern on the 1-minute or 3-minute chart, such as a tight range, a symmetrical triangle, or a wedge. When price breaks above resistance (for longs) or below support (for shorts) on high volume, enter in the direction of the break. Your stop-loss goes just inside the broken level (the opposite side of the breakout candle), and your target is 1.5 to 2.5 times your risk.
The most common mistake in breakout scalping is entering too early on a false breakout. To reduce false signals, wait for the breakout candle to close above or below the level before entering. You can also require that the breakout is accompanied by a spike in volume, confirming genuine participation. Additionally, watch the order book during the breakout. If the resting orders on the broken level are being absorbed or have been pulled, the breakout is more likely to follow through.
Strategy 4: VWAP Reversion
The Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) is a benchmark that shows the average price weighted by volume throughout the trading day. Institutional traders and algorithms frequently use VWAP as a fair value reference, which makes it a powerful scalping tool.
The VWAP reversion strategy works as follows: when price moves significantly above or below the VWAP on the 1-minute or 3-minute chart, expect a mean-reversion move back toward the VWAP. Go short when price is extended above VWAP with a target at VWAP. Go long when price is extended below VWAP with a target at VWAP. This strategy works best during range-bound or low-trend sessions. Combine VWAP reversion with the order book. If price is extended below VWAP and you see a strong bid wall forming with aggressive market buys on the tape, that is a high-probability long scalp. Conversely, if price is extended above VWAP and you see heavy selling on the tape with a stacked ask wall, short with a target at VWAP and a stop above the ask wall.
Strategy 5: Order Flow Scalping
Order flow scalping is an advanced technique that focuses entirely on the flow of market orders and resting limit orders, with minimal reliance on traditional chart indicators. The core principle is that price moves because of an imbalance between buying and selling pressure, and by reading the real-time flow of orders, you can anticipate the next micro-move before it shows up on the candlestick chart.
Tools for order flow scalping include footprint charts (which show volume traded at each price level within each candle), volume profile (which shows accumulated volume at each price level over a session), cumulative delta (which tracks the net difference between market buys and market sells), and the raw Level 2 order book. Footprint charts are particularly powerful because they reveal whether a candle was driven by aggressive buying, aggressive selling, or a mix of both, information that a standard candlestick chart completely hides.
A typical order flow scalp signal: price is at a key level, the footprint chart shows a strong imbalance of aggressive buying at that level (the delta is heavily positive), and the ask side of the order book is thinning out. This confluence suggests that buyers are in control and price is about to break higher. You enter long, targeting the next liquidity cluster above.
Strategy 6: Spread Scalping
Spread scalping, also known as market-making, involves placing limit orders on both the bid and ask sides of the order book and profiting from the spread between them. You simultaneously post a buy limit order at the best bid and a sell limit order at the best ask. When both orders fill, your profit is the spread.
This strategy is most effective on instruments with wider spreads and moderate volatility. On ultra-liquid pairs like BTC/USDT where the spread is often just one tick, the profit per trade is minimal. On mid-cap altcoin futures or less liquid pairs, spreads can be wider, providing more room for profit. The risk is that one side of your order fills while price moves against you before the other side fills, leaving you with an unhedged position. Managing this risk requires rapid cancellation and reposting of orders, which is why most spread scalpers use automated systems or bots.
Strategy 7: EMA Bounce Scalping
This strategy uses the 9-period and 21-period Exponential Moving Averages on the 1-minute chart. When the 9 EMA is above the 21 EMA, the short-term trend is up, and you only look for long scalps. When the 9 EMA is below the 21 EMA, you only look for short scalps.
The entry trigger is a pullback to the 9 EMA during a trend. In an uptrend, wait for price to dip to the 9 EMA and form a bullish candle (such as a hammer or bullish engulfing). The strength of EMA bounce scalping is its simplicity and objectivity. The rules are clear, the entries are mechanical, and there is no ambiguity about trend direction. The weakness is that it performs poorly during choppy, trendless markets where the EMAs cross back and forth rapidly. To filter out chop, add a condition that the 9 and 21 EMAs must have been in the current alignment (trending) for at least 5 to 10 candles before you take a signal.
Advanced EMA scalpers add a third layer by checking the 15-minute chart trend before entering a 1-minute scalp. If the 9/21 EMAs on the 15-minute chart are aligned bullish and the 1-minute chart gives a long EMA bounce signal, the trade has dual-timeframe confirmation, which significantly increases the probability of success. Conversely, if the 1-minute chart gives a long signal but the 15-minute trend is bearish, the signal is weaker and many scalpers will skip it entirely. Technical Indicators for Scalping
Indicators for scalping must be fast, responsive, and provide actionable signals on very short timeframes. Exponential Moving Averages (EMA): The 9 EMA and 21 EMA on the 1-minute or 3-minute chart are the most popular moving averages for scalping. Use the relationship between the 9 and 21 EMA to determine micro-trend direction, and use pullbacks to the 9 EMA as entry triggers during trends. It tells you where fair value is based on volume-weighted price, and deviations from VWAP create mean-reversion opportunities. Many scalpers use VWAP bands (standard deviations above and below VWAP) as dynamic overbought and oversold zones. When price reaches the upper VWAP band, it is overextended to the upside and likely to revert. When it reaches the lower band, it is overextended to the downside.
RSI (Relative Strength Index) on short timeframes: The standard 14-period RSI is too slow for scalping. Instead, use a 7-period or even 5-period RSI on the 1-minute chart. Readings above 80 indicate short-term overbought conditions (potential scalp short), and readings below 20 indicate short-term oversold conditions (potential scalp long). RSI divergences on the 1-minute chart, where price makes a new high but RSI makes a lower high, are particularly powerful scalp reversal signals.
Bollinger Bands: Bollinger Bands on the 1-minute chart with a 20-period SMA and 2 standard deviations provide dynamic overbought and oversold zones. When price touches or exceeds the upper band, it is overextended and likely to pull back. When it touches the lower band, it is oversold and likely to bounce. Bollinger Band squeezes, where the bands contract tightly, indicate low volatility that is about to expand. A breakout from a squeeze is a strong scalping signal in the direction of the break.
Volume Profile: Volume profile plots the volume traded at each price level over a specified period. The standard 1% risk per trade rule still applies, but since scalpers take many trades per day, you also need strict daily loss limits. Scalping with Leverage: How Leverage Affects Scalping
Leverage is almost a necessity in scalping because the raw price movements you are capturing are so small. A 0.10% move on a spot position with no leverage barely registers on your account equity. The same 0.10% move with 10x leverage becomes a 1.0% return on your margin, which is a meaningful profit. The optimal leverage for scalping depends on your strategy and risk tolerance. For example, if you have a $10,000 account and use 10x leverage on a $1,000 margin allocation, your notional position is $10,000.
